When it comes to smart home integration, names don’t come much bigger than Nest.
With a growing family of intelligent tech products already on the market including a smart smoke and carbon monoxide detector as well as their latest smart home security camera, Nest are perhaps best known for their flagship product and it’s latest iteration which comes in the form of the third-generation Nest Learning Thermostat which is looking to turn up the heat on the smart thermostat market.
Featuring a revised (and beautiful as ever) design which includes a larger display while maintaining a compact profile, the latest Nest Learning Thermostat shows that when it comes to smart home technology, form and function can pair together perfectly.
The latest version of the home temperature control system utilizes built-in sensors which it uses to locate the user, while the brains of the device work to create a bespoke temperature schedule which adjusts automatically based on your movements, habits and the time of day.
Of course, for the manually inclined, the Nest also allows for direct control on the device itself or remotely using the companion Nest app from your smartphone or device.
By this stage, Nest are far from the only game in town when it comes to smart thermostat solutions and rival offering such as those from Honeywell and Ecobee have now arrived to compete in the market.
So what makes the Nest stand out among the new competition?
Well to start with let’s talk about those looks.
I mean seriously, the visuals of the version 3 alone just cry out for you to change the temperature more than is probably healthy.
Combine this with the inclusion of ‘Farsight’, a far-field sensor which allows you to view the temperature and time on the display from further away than before, and it soon becomes clear that design aesthetics remain high on the agenda for the guys at Nest HQ.
The Nest Learning Thermostat 3.0 provides both Home/Away Assist functionality as well as Family Accounts.
Family Accounts allow users in the same home to set up their own individual accounts for the system which then pairs with Home/Away Assist to track each family member’s phone and adjust the climate accordingly.
In terms of usability and overall performance, the V3 Nest thermostat maintains the earlier pedigree of simplicity that Nest have become known for in the smart home tech market, with installation, WiFi setup and app configuration that won’t leave you with a headache.
Like it’s older siblings, the third generation Nest thermostat is designed to work seamlessly with other Nest family products such as the Nest Cam and Nest Protect, allowing for a number of automations out of the box where these other devices are present in the home environment.
As well as this though, the Nest also has a dedicated IFTTT channel meaning you can fire up a number of recipes to make automative magic happen whenever certain criteria are met.
Perhaps the coolest feature of the latest generation of the Nest thermostat though is the ability to work with Amazon Alexa. With this integration, you can simply enter the Alexa app, enable the Nest Thermostat Skill and tell the system to change the temperature using your voice.
While Nest may no longer be the new kid on the block when it comes to smart thermostats, a whole host of new features including stunning visuals, Alexa integration and Family Accounts functionality still make the 3rd gen Learning Thermostat a serious contender for the ultimate smart home temperature solution.
Couple these updates with the trademark ease of operation and overall usability and latest version of the Nest Learning Thermostat feels just as appealing as the the first when it originally hit the market.Learn more about the 3rd Generation Nest Learning Thermostat here
