The S+ Personal Sleep Solution by US brand ResMed is a sleep sensor and monitor that’s looking to change the way you think about a good night’s sleep.
While there are other sleep trackers out there all looking for a slice of the sleep-enhancing action, the S+ works slightly differently to them all.
Rather than incorporating a direct wearable device that attaches either to you or to your bed, the S+ by ResMed sits beside your bed and monitors your sleep without ever touching you, making it a fully contactless sleep tracker.
When placed beside your bed (a bedside table/cabinet/shelf is essential here to make sure the device is close enough to your sleeping spot), the S+ effectively keeps a digital eye on your movements during your slumber.
As well as tracking the standard sleep measurements (light, heavy, REM), the S+ takes things a step further to get a full picture of your day leading up to sleep by presenting a questionnaire on the mobile app.
Once the ‘Sleep’ button on the app is pressed, the questionnaire will ask things such as how much caffeine or alcohol have been consumed and whether the day has been stressful or not.
By collecting this information alongside the subsequent sleep information recorded, S+ is able to present you with a context to a good or bad night’s sleep and allow you to observe any correlating patterns – “ah, my sleep was pretty bad on Tuesday, but then again, I guess I can put that down to the 5 cups of coffee I had in the afternoon”.
When the questionnaire has been completed, it’s time to hit the sack and it’s here that S+ gets to work with some serious sleep smart tech.
Using a form of radio frequency (RF) monitoring to track the movements of breathing and your body during sleep, S+ begins to watch and assess what sleep stage you’re currently in and when exactly that changes.
Alongside this, the device uses built-in sensors to detect loud noises as well as changes in light and temperature to compare alongside your sleep patterns in order to evaluate how to improve your sleep going forward.
The idea here is to provide an all-over holistic assessment of your sleep and the contributing factors that can be altered to improve it in the future.
S+ also features a smart alarm that determines the best time to wake you up. Luckily, this doesn’t mean you’ll miss that 8:00am train if it decides you should be waking at 9:30 though. Instead, you let the device know the time you want to wake up and then S+ takes a window of around 15-30 minutes on either side to determine what’s best for rising.
On the audio input and output side, there are also a couple of really neat features included in the S+ which make nice additions to a holistic sleep improvement device.
A variety of sleep sounds can be played from the device to try and help put you into a restful mood and encourage sleep. These sounds are also matched to the breathing patterns observed by S+ which is also said to promote the onset of sleep.
As well as this audio output, the S+ Personal Sleep Solution also offers a feature for recording your own thoughts verbally to clear your mind before bed meaning you shouldn’t have to spend an hour tossing and turning worrying about remembering those facts for tomorrow’s meeting or paying the water bill.
If you’re looking for a sleep improvement assistant that will help you analyze, understand and improve upon your current sleeping patterns in a meaningful and life-improving way, then the S+ from ResMed is an excellent place to start when it comes to fully-featured, non-contact sleep monitors.
