It always seems to be those times when you’re most occupied with another job in the kitchen that you find yourself needing to scribble a note, switch off a device or answer the phone.
The Triby Smart Speaker is looking to step-in and bring the humble household task manager into the smart home era.
At it’s core, the Triby is a portable speaker with a whole host of added extras to help you get things done in the Kitchen or really wherever you find yourself taking or storing the device in your home.
As well as providing a digital internet radio, Triby incorporates Amazon’s virtual assistant Alexa for smart-voice recognition tasks as well acting as a hands-free speaker phone and digital notepad for leaving memos – “Don’t forget to buy milk!”.
Oh, and it comes with a built-in magnet to attach it to the fridge.
The inclusion of the Alexa Voice Service is a real bonus for the device, effectively giving you access to all of the features of the remit of the digital assistant from playing your Spotify playlist to asking questions or retrieving current weather or traffic conditions.
Even better for the interconnected home is the ability to utilise Alexa to control any smart home devices directly, just by using your voice.
When used in the kitchen (which is where the Triby seems most at home in our opinion), Alexa integration also makes asking for things like weight or temperature conversions a piece of cake when you’re up to your elbows with a difficult recipe or busy washing dishes.
The ability to make and receive calls is accomplished thanks to the ability to pair with your smartphone through a VOIP service which again, is incredibly useful if you’re hands are occupied.
In this instance, the device utilises a combination of two speakers (also used for music and other audio playback) as well as sound-cancelling microphones to help the person at the other end of your call hear you above the clattering of pans or smashing of plates.
Triby features an ‘always-on’ display on the front of the device which allows you or other family members to leave doodles or text notes sent across from an app on your smartphone and which show up immediately on the screen.
The display on the device uses e-ink to show any text or graphics from your phone without draining the battery with a power-hungry colour display.
